Soft Tissue Grafting Procedure

Healing gums, restoring a balanced gumline with advanced pinhole rejuvenation, and more!

As Peter O. Cabrera, DDS & Bahareh Sabzehei, DDS, MS, Periodontics and Dental Implants, you benefit from our specialists’ array of advanced treatments and technologies. They have the additional training, expertise, and onsite capabilities to provide many options for treatment that cannot be found at other offices in Chicago, Illinois, and beyond. These treatments are largely based on the latest research and science. Techniques and technologies furthermore support the most precise treatment, as well as safety, comfort, tissue preservation, and natural healing.

The Pinhole Gum Rejuvenation Technique is a great fit and complement to our many other state-of-the-art services and capabilities. It may be appropriate for gum recession. The gums may recede or pull away from the teeth with the passage of time or, as a result, gum (periodontal) disease. Other factors include destructive habits or behaviors, such as aggressively brushing the teeth and using chewing or smokeless tobacco. Patients often notice gingival recession because their teeth may look longer than usual. The truth is the gums have simply pulled away from the teeth, revealing more of the white enamel.

Effective care without cutting

Traditionally, professionals were limited in their options to treat recessed or damaged gums. These options largely involved using cutting techniques and instruments like scalpels to open up, remove, and otherwise access and alter tissues. Such surgical techniques are largely associated with side effects, risks of complications, and longer recovery and healing times. They also involve additional needs for pain management. Sometimes, the use of localized anesthetic delivered via a needle can be “triggering,” especially for patients with a history of dental fear or phobia.

The pinhole technique that our periodontists use avoids the pitfalls associated with traditional surgery. Drs. Cabrera and Sabzehei use special tools and approaches to gently loosen the recessed or damaged tissue. The loosened tissue is then repositioned. So, it covers and builds up the depressed or recessed areas at the gumline. All this is accomplished through a tiny site – no bigger than a pinhole! This feature makes for a particularly conservative and light-touch procedure. The day after, no one can even tell you had a procedure performed at the site. And you won’t notice anything undesirable either, in the form of lingering pain, bleeding, or swelling.

Of course, no treatment is universally appropriate. For this reason, numerous other approaches may be recommended. Various forms of grafting, for instance, can be used to build up gums that have sustained irreparable damage due to disease.

Every effort is made to ensure that all procedures are performed to the highest standards, and your comfort and safety are always our priority at Peter O. Cabrera, DDS & Bahareh Sabzehei, DDS, MS, Periodontics, and Dental Implants
