Gum Recession

Getting to the source of gum recession with advanced diagnostics, tailored care

Underlying problems with the gums and bone can manifest as gum recession; however, visual appearance alone is not sufficient to make a diagnosis. Fortunately, you are at the right place for an accurate diagnosis of any concerning changes to your gums.

Peter O. Cabrera, DDS and Bahareh Sabzehei DDS, MS, Periodontics and Dental Implants are specialists in preventing, identifying, treating, and managing conditions affecting the supportive tissues and structures in the jaw (or periodontium).

Additionally, as periodontists, Drs. Cabrera and Sabzehei support patients’ oral health in Chicago, Illinois, with investments in cutting-edge technologies.

How to reverse and treat the problem

Our diagnostic technologies support the process of comfortably and precisely identifying the nature and extent of the concerns with your gums. An accurate diagnosis informs treatments that effectively address the underlying problem or source of any concerning changes. Additionally, our advanced technologies and techniques also support the most precise, painless, and conservative (tissue-preserving) approach to healing and caring for the gums.

Receding gums refer to the loss of gum (gingival) tissue and underlying bone. When the roots of the teeth are exposed due to the loss of protective gum tissue, serious complications can arise — including deep decay and tooth loss. However, our specialists appreciate that many factors are responsible for what can appear to be the loss or deterioration of the gingiva. Notably, the natural thickness of the bone and tissues, the shape of the jaws, and teeth positioning or alignment contribute to recessed gums.

Depending on what Drs. Cabrera or Sabzehei find, as the result of an evaluation, treatment options may include soft tissue reconstruction with a minimally invasive gum graft. The graft is positioned to cover up the exposed roots and to build up gums that have deteriorated due to progressive disease.

Another nod to our use of conservative and gentle techniques is the Chao Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST). Tissues are repositioned through tiny, pin-sized holes without invasive or aggressive cutting instruments and techniques.

Additionally, individuals with otherwise healthy gums but aesthetic concerns over the appearance of their gumline may be good candidates for periodontal plastic surgery.

As you can see, options to address your concerns are as varied as the patients that our specialists treat. You and your situation are one-of-a-kind and demand highly personalized and tailored care.
