Exploring the Advantages of Laser-Assisted Gum Disease Treatment Over Traditional Periodontal Surgery
Individuals from across the Chicago, Illinois area and beyond trust the specialty expertise of the team at Perio Implant Chicago. However, our knowledge, skill, and experience in periodontics are furthermore complemented by advanced technologies. These technological capabilities include periodontal laser surgery.
What is laser-assisted periodontal surgery?
This treatment presents a minimally invasive way for our doctors to treat periodontal disease (gum disease). It presents an attractive alternative to traditional surgery.
What is traditional gum surgery?
Typically, this process involves using a scalpel to access the underlying bone in the jaw and the roots of the teeth. After we have accessed this area, the debris and tartar are removed. As needed, bony defects are addressed with bone graft materials. The bone may also be reshaped. Lastly, the openings in the gums are sutured, and the tissues are allowed to heal.
How is laser gum surgery performed?
Lasers also remove damaged tissues and kill harmful bacteria; however, this process is accomplished without using a scalpel and sutures. Directed toward the diseased tissues, the laser device delivers energy deep beneath the tissue surface. It destroys bacteria, plaque, and damaged tissues. After the infected tissue is removed, special tools are used to gently yet thoroughly lift stubborn plaque build-up (known as tartar or calculus). The laser is then passed over the tissue a second time, effectively sealing the area adjacent to the tooth. Stimulating stem cells to form bone around the teeth promotes natural healing. This process helps preserve the surrounding healthy tissue and facilitates the production of collagen and connective tissue.
What are the key benefits?
In addition to promoting a conservative (tissue-preserving) experience and natural healing, patients appreciate that lasers do not require scalpels. No cutting and incisions are involved, which renders sutures or stitches unnecessary. Lasers present a highly targeted procedure, too. They pinpoint and kill bacteria while leaving the healthy surrounding tissues untouched. With lasers, we can generally treat disease and restore gum health faster and with less discomfort than traditional surgical methods.
How do I prepare for treatment?
Pre-operative care is minimal. We simply ask that you avoid consuming caffeine on the day of your procedure. Do not drink alcohol before your procedure, and refrain from smoking before and afterward, as it can impair the healing process.
What can I expect during treatment?
We start by administering a local anesthetic to numb the treatment site fully. Treatment may require two appointments and follow-up periodontal maintenance appointments. We generally want to evaluate how well you are healing every few weeks. The final results are measured at least six months after the initial treatment.
How do I care for my mouth after each appointment?
Following your surgery, you should stick to a soft food diet and avoid carbonated beverages for at least three to ten days. You should also avoid using straws, spitting, hard swishing, and other vigorous habits that could interfere with the healing tissues/sites. Do not chew gum, refrain from heavy lifting and intense exercise, and, of course, maintain good oral care at home.
An extra-soft bristle brush is a must for the first week. Do not brush or touch the gum tissue. You should also avoid flossing below the gums for one month. Do not use electric toothbrushes for four to six weeks, and you can start using your Waterpik® three months post-treatment. An ice pack should only be applied for the first 24 hours. OTC pain medications should be taken on an as-needed basis. Finally, we can provide guidance on incorporating bite guards and StellaLife® products into your healing journey.
